Qatar Airways is planning to place a big order for wide-body aircraft as part of its plan for long-term growth and to increase its presence in more places by expanding its global footprint. According to reports, Qatar Airways’ CEO, Badr al Meer, is currently working on a request for proposal (RFP) with aircraft manufacturers to place a major order soon.

Although the CCO didn’t reveal if the deal would be with Airbus, Boeing, or a combination of both, he confirmed that the announcement would be coming shortly. Moreover, this decision comes after QR’s boss commented at the Farnborough Airshow 2024 that the airline was planning to place a large order.

“To secure the growth of tomorrow by continuing to have a very strong and the best fleet in the industry, our CEO is working on the RFP (request for proposal) with the aircraft manufacturer to place a big order soon,” said Qatar Airways CCO, Thierry Antinori.

Recently, Qatar Airways saw a 9% increase in passengers overall, with Europe and Germany doing particularly well, growing by 14% and 12%, respectively and aiming to gain more market share in other countries also.

    Wide-Body Aircraft Options

Currently, the passenger wide-body aircraft in production are the Airbus A330neo, A350, Boeing 777X and 787, even though the B777X haven’t been certified yet.

In 2024, Qatar Airways placed an order for 20 additional Boeing 777X aircraft, bringing its total B777X orders close to 100. The Gulf carrier has played its role in the Boeing 777X program, being the first to order both the 777-9 passenger and the 777-8 variant.

This airline has played a major role in the Boeing 777X program, being the first to order both the 777-9 passenger plane and the 777-8 Freighter. The 777X uses technology from the 787 Dreamliner, setting new standards for efficiency and being better for the environment.

     CEO’s Vision for the Future

Qatar Airways’ CEO highlighted the airline’s dedication to innovation and quality. He said, “We make sure that every Qatar Airways passenger experiences only the best products and services in the industry.

Russell Stokes, President and CEO of Commercial Engines and Services at GE Aerospace, spoke about the partnership with Qatar Airways. He stated that, “the GE9X is the world’s most powerful and fuel-efficient turbofan, and we’re excited to help support Qatar Airways’ growth with this technology.”

So, Qatar Airways is gearing up to order additional wide-body aircraft. It is expected that the order will be split between the two aviation giants.
