Flydubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv was diverted to Saudi Arabia on September 30 after a violent incident involving the pilots triggered emergency signals and a rapid descent, prompting Israel to scramble fighter jets.

Flydubai Flight FZ1073 Plunges 15,000 Feet
Flydubai flight FZ1073 departed Dubai International Airport (DXB) at around 7:05 a.m. local time on Wednesday, September 30, bound for Ben Gurion Airport (TLV) in Tel Aviv.
The flight was operated by a Boeing 737 MAX 8 registered as A6-FKF. The aircraft was at around 34,000 feet over the region when flight-tracking data showed a sudden and substantial descent. The review of tracking data showed the aircraft descending from approximately 34,000 feet to about 16,600 feet in just over two minutes.
Flightradar24 separately reported that the aircraft appeared to lose nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds before transmitting its first emergency signal. However, the exact profile of the descent remains subject to interpretation because flight-tracking data can differ depending on the source and the way vertical movement is calculated.
The aircraft subsequently transmitted squawk 7700, the international transponder code used to indicate a general emergency. It then transmitted squawk 7500, the code used to indicate unlawful interference with an aircraft, which is commonly associated with a hijacking.
The 7500 signal triggered an immediate security response in Israel. Israeli military officials said fighter jets were scrambled after the emergency signal was received as the aircraft was approaching Israeli airspace.
The aircraft did not continue toward Tel Aviv. Instead, it turned toward Saudi Arabia and eventually landed safely at Tabuk Airport (TUU). Flightradar24 reported that the aircraft later transmitted 7700 again before landing.

“Flydubai can confirm that flight FZ 1073 operating from Dubai International (DXB) to Ben Gurion International Airport (TLV) on 30 September experienced an incident while en route,” the airline said.
The airline also confirmed that the aircraft landed safely in Tabuk and that all passengers were safe and accounted for. Flydubai did not provide details about what happened inside the cockpit and said its teams were working with the relevant authorities.
The lack of an immediate official explanation left several aspects of the incident unclear, including the exact sequence of events that caused the aircraft’s rapid descent and the subsequent emergency signals.
Reports Indicate Violent Cockpit Confrontation
Information emerging after the aircraft landed has provided more details about the incident, although several elements remain under investigation. An Israeli official told Reuters that the emergency signals were transmitted after the two pilots became involved in a physical altercation.
Reuters later reported, citing two Israeli officials, that the current Israeli assessment was that the incident may have been an attempted terror attack. The officials said the co-pilot was believed to have stabbed the captain before cabin crew entered the cockpit and regained control of the aircraft.
Tabuk Airport confirmed that both the captain and co-pilot were injured and taken to hospital for medical treatment. Passenger accounts also described a violent scene inside the aircraft.
One passenger reportedly said that passengers heard screaming before the cockpit door was opened and that one of the pilots had been stabbed.
Images and videos circulating online appeared to show blood inside the aircraft, although individual images and videos have not all been independently verified. There have also been reports that two off-duty pilots travelling as passengers helped operate the aircraft after the cockpit confrontation. This has been reported through a passenger account, but it has not been independently confirmed by flydubai or the authorities.
The aircraft ultimately continued under control and was diverted to Tabuk rather than attempting to reach Tel Aviv.
The fact that the Boeing 737 was able to land safely despite the reported injuries to both operating pilots remains one of the key aspects investigators will examine.
