Video: Air Busan A321 Catches Fire in South Korea

On January 28, 2025, an Air Busan Airbus A321 aircraft was engulfed in flames at Gimhae International Airport in Busan, South Korea. Fortunately, all 169 passengers and seven crew members were evacuated via emergency slides, with only minor injuries reported.

The aircraft, registered as HL7763, was operating flight BX391, scheduled to depart from Busan to Hong Kong. The incident occurred at approximately 10:26 p.m. local time while the plane was taxiing for departure. Witnesses reported smoke and flames emerging from the tail section, prompting an immediate response from the crew and emergency services.

Emergency teams acted swiftly, ensuring the safe evacuation of all 176 occupants. Three passengers sustained minor injuries during the evacuation but were treated promptly. The quick action of the crew and responders prevented any fatalities.

Fire Believed to Have Originated in Tail Section

The fire is believed to have originated in the tail section, potentially linked to the auxiliary power unit (APU), though the exact cause remains under investigation. The flames spread toward the fuselage but were brought under control by firefighters, who extinguished the blaze by 11:31 p.m. Photos and videos shared online revealed significant damage to the passenger cabin and the rear of the aircraft.

This incident has heightened concerns over aviation safety in South Korea, occurring just weeks after a tragic aviation disaster on December 29, 2024. In that event, a Jeju Air Boeing 737 crashed during an emergency landing at Muan Airport, resulting in the loss of 179 lives.

While authorities have not established a connection between the two incidents, the Air Busan fire has sparked renewed scrutiny of safety protocols. Officials expressed relief that the prompt response at Gimhae International Airport prevented a more severe outcome.

Investigators are working to determine the fire’s cause, and the affected runway has been temporarily closed for inspection and repairs.
