On January 16, 2025, Global Airlines’ first Airbus A380 arrived at Beja Airport, Portugal, marking an exciting chapter in its operational plans. The superjumbo arrived in the Portuguese soil after months of maintenance and modifications in Germany.
The Airbus A380, formerly operated by China Southern Airlines, underwent an extensive overhaul at Elbe Flugzeugwerke (EFW) in Dresden, Germany, starting in October 2024. The maintenance process included comprehensive servicing, engine tests, and a partial livery paint that combined Global Airlines’ branding with remnants of the Chinese airline.
Beja Airport serves as Hi Fly’s primary flight testing and maintenance center. The wet-lease operator, renowned for its expertise with the A380, transported the aircraft on its 2,237 km flight, piloted by Commander Carlos Mirpuri. Speaking about the aircraft, Mirpuri praised its advanced technology and maneuverability, likening its handling to smaller Airbus models.
“This is an iconic aircraft, and its potential for redefining air travel is unparalleled,” Mirpuri stated, adding that he looks forward to its entry into commercial service with Global Airlines.

Historic Moment for Beja and Portugal
The arrival of the first Global Airlines’ A380 in Beja marks only the second time this superjumbo has landed on Portuguese soil. The first was in 2018 when Hi Fly introduced its own A380 as part of the Mirpuri Foundation’s “Save the Coral Reefs” campaign.
Aviation enthusiasts and locals gathered at Beja Airport to witness the historic sight, celebrating Portugal’s growing importance in the global aviation landscape.
As Global Airlines’ readies the aircraft for commercial operations, Beja Airport is poised to serve as a strategic location. Hi Fly has been instrumental in preparing the A380 for service, leveraging its experience as one of only 15 operators worldwide to have flown this iconic aircraft.

Global Airlines’ Vision for the A380
Global Airlines, led by founder and CEO James Asquith, envisions the Airbus A380 as the cornerstone of its operations. The startup plans to begin commercial flights in 2025, with the highly anticipated London Heathrow to New York JFK route leading the way.
“This is the fifth major milestone in our journey, and it’s a testament to the collaboration between Global Airlines and Hi Fly. Together, we are bringing the A380 back to life, offering unparalleled comfort and luxury to our future passengers,” Asquith said.
By partnering with an operator known for its technical expertise, the startup aims to deliver a premium travel experience that sets it apart from competitors.
